The Guigues Village

The canton of Guigues is erected in 1882, followed shortly by the township of Duhamel and that of Laverlochère. In 1887, 632 people from 92 families reside in Témiscamingue; 20 families live in the township of Guigues.

In 1897, the founding year of the municipality, 300 people live in Guigues and plow the roads through the forest. The municipality will bear the name of the first bishop of the county, Mgr Joseph-Eugène-Bruno-Guigues, a native of France whom arrived in Canada in 1844. Father Guigues is appointed first bishop of the new diocese of Bytown (now Ottawa) in 1847.

The township of Guigues becomes an incorporated municipality in 1897. In 1889, the first land road linking the different municipalities is built. The road spans from the “Baie-des-Pères’’ and on to “La Loutre”. That same year, another road was built from this settlement road to join the Wright Mine, the first silver mine in Canada.

The first pioneer to settle in St-Bruno-de-Guigues is Mr. Edouard Piché.
